Reels

Maybe the best reel for flying shortline fighters is the original Gator-Yoyo (have a look at the bottom of the gallery). You can make a similar Reel by yourself.
We use a piece of air conditioning pipe with a diameter of about 11 cm - width about 13 cm. You heat oil (about 2 cm high) in a chinese wok, which you grab from your wifeīs kitchen. After you dip the pipe in the hot oil, you press it on an upside down flower pot (thatīs how the angular side is done, so the line can leave the reel pretty easy). After cooling down, the other side is also dipped in the oil and then on a plate, so you get a flat side with an right angle.
When flying this flat side is lying on the ground and the line can easily leave the reel from the angular side. In the inside of the reel you can put a wodden dowel so you can hold the reel.

Line

A very good flying line is industrial cotton thread, which can be waxed. By waxing a line the stiffness is increased, which gives two advantages, first you donīt get tangles that easy and second the line has more grip.
You can use candle wax/parrafine with a max. amount of 10 % of bees wax. Donīt use pure bees wax, this is too sticky.
The easiest waxing method is putting a complete spool of line in hot wax for some hours (see picture on the right).
Another line you could use is monofilament fishing line or thin spectra/dyneema line. Breaking strength should be around 9 lbs to 28 lbs.
